| Abstract: |
This article gives an overview of this important
industry?from its inception in the 1960s to its heyday in
the 1980s, the boom following the implementation of
the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and
its current condition. We conclude that even though increased
manufacturing activity in other countries such
as China has produced a tougher global manufacturing
market, Mexico remains attractive for foreign direct
investment. However, structural reforms are needed to
maintain the competitive advantages Mexico has developed
over the past three decades.
